Tony Hitchcock

Tony has over 35 years of experience in the large-scale manufacture of biopharmaceuticals. As a founding staff member of Cobra Tony has been responsible for the development of much of Cobra’s manufacturing technologies in the field of DNA and virus production. He has held a number of senior roles, managing both manufacturing and development functions within the company, working on over 40 programmes for the development of novel therapeutic products including protein, recombinant virus, bacteriophage and plasmid DNA products. His current role is based in the commercial group and support external collaboration and outreach activities. Additionally Tony is currently a member of the steering committee of BioProNET, the BIA Science and Innovation Advisory Committee (SIAC) and of industrial advisory boards for Aston and Loughborough Universities, and a serves on EPSRC, BBSRC and Vinnova review panels. He was also named in the Medicine Makers 2019 Power list as one of the industries’ top influencers. He has also served as a member of the BBSRC BSI (Biosciences for industry panel), the steering committee of the UK Bioprocess Research Industry Club (BRIC), the scientific advisory of the Pharmaceutical Centre for Excellence (COEBP) at the University of Manchester, the Executive Board of the European Federation of Biotechnology and the industrial advisory board for the Astbury Centre at the University of Leeds.

Whilst the safety, effectiveness and efficiency of SUS is of paramount concern when determining where they should be deployed to deliver biomanufacturing excellence, it is undeniably true that concerns around sustainability will continue to increase in importance. This interactive discussion will open up the debate around this subject and consider some of the questions that will need to be considered:

· What is meant by sustainability in the biopharma industry?

· How can you begin to assess the impact of utilising different manufacturing processes and equipment?

· What options might there be for improving the environmental impact of SUS?

· How can you balance decisions around sustainability with other priorities and how high a priority is sustainability?

· Are there future technological developments that will improve the sustainability of biomanufacturing processes?

Following a short introduction to the topic from our Conference Chairman, we will divide into break-out groups to discuss this important topic. At the end of the discussion, a nominated spokesperson will feed back the highlights from their group’s discussions.
